Another birthday, another empty chair for Suu Kyi

The Free Burma Campaign South Africa (FBCSA) is using Suu Kyi’s 65th birthday this weekend to launch a postcard campaign, calling on the SA government to reject the forthcoming elections in Burma, and appealing to them to join Australia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the UK in demanding that the military government be taken to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Dr Thein Win, FBCSA chairperson, urged those “who have empathy with the people of Burma” to participate in the campaign, titled “Yes to real elections! No to military selections!” and to send postcards to the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation in Pretoria. “South Africa has a moral responsibility to support the people of Burma,” Thein Win told M&G. “We request the SA government to denounce the 2010 election and to support the 1990 election result,” he added [...]

Statement on 65th birthday of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

Today, June 19th 2010, marks the 65th birthday of pro-democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi while she does remain alone under house arrest.

After the premeditated Depayin Massacred in May 2003, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was again confined to house arrest although her house arrest term was completed on May 27, 2009 according to the existing law. Instead of being rightfully freed, she was held and trialed with unlawful charges at the notorious Insein prison and since these proceedings she is kept under house arrest [...]

Ireland’s leading musicians honour Burma’s Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi

Tomorrow, Saturday 19 June marks the 65th birthday of Burma’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, adding yet another day to the almost 15 years that she has spent under house arrest. Burma’s Detained Democracy Leader Honored Globally for 65th Birthday

Activists and supporters spoke at the Bangkok press club Thursday calling for Aung San Suu Kyi’s release and for the government to agree to a dialogue with her and opposition groups.

Canada’s Ambassador to Thailand, Ron Hoffman, says Aung San Suu Kyi is one of the few foreigners granted honorary Canadian citizenship for her work towards democracy in Burma.
